Adjunct Instructor of Interior Design

Job Summary:

The Department of Architecture and Interior Design seeks an adjunct instructor to teach one or more courses in interior design.
The successful applicant must have the ability to teach a variety of Interior Design courses that fulfill the Interior Design Program curriculum goals based on CIDA standards and industry principles and applications; actively support the interior design program strategic plan;, develop and maintain curriculum for face-to-face and online teaching; and participate in services to support the mission of the program, department, the university, and the Judson community. Knowledge of current codes governing the built environment is essential. Working with students for recruiting, advising, coordinating student Interior Design club activities, and maintaining the interior design resource library is important. The ability to teach lecture and studio courses will give one a mixed schedule. The candidate is expected to have a vibrant on campus presence. The candidate is expected to remain active in research and scholarly activities, including supporting and actively participating in in CIDA alignment of the program.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Applicants must support Judson University’s liberal arts-based programs, distinctively Christian mission, and community standards.
  • Teach undergraduate courses as assigned by the department both in person and online.
  • Have a vibrant on campus presence.
  • Keep posted on office hours during the week, which are scheduled at times most beneficial to students.
  • Provide academic advising to students.
  • Assign and submit grades following established University schedules.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled school or college meetings and functions.
  • Support program recruiting and special events.
  • Participate in activities such as student organization events, alumni events, advisory board meetings, and commencement.
  • Engage in pursuits that enable one to remain current in the respective discipline.
  • Engage in pursuits that help further organize and contribute to the growth of the body of knowledge in the respective discipline and/or explore interdisciplinary implications.
  • Supports and actively participates in CIDA initiatives for the program.
  • Disseminates research/scholarship to students through teaching, presentations, and publication of journal articles on the application or education of healthcare administration.
Qualifications:
  • Demonstrate a vital and growing Christian faith
  • Share a commitment to excellence in teaching within a Christ-centered academic community
  • Hold NCIDQ certification or be in the process of acquiring these credentials of acquiring these credentials by the time this search is concluded or within one year of hire.
  • An earned bachelor’s degree in interior design.
  • At least five years U.S. Interior Design practice experience.
  • A track record of effective communication and interpersonal skills with a desire to engage in excellent teaching with evidence-demonstrated ability or potential to deliver high-quality instruction in lecture and studio courses.
  • Documented ability to learn and adapt to new teaching content areas and software.
  • Demonstrates a defined area of content expertise and interest for scholarly activities.
  • Recognized knowledge of the key concepts and applications in Interior Design, from the following: design theory, human-centered or inclusive design, drafting/CAD/Revit/Sketch Up, rendering skills, sustainability/LEED, WELL Building Standards, ADA codes, environmental systems, and other design-related software/VR.
Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to the candidate who has experience in the following areas:

  • An earned master’s degree in interior design is preferred. If the master’s degree is in a different field, the candidate must have relevant work experience in field of interior design.
  • Registration with the State of Illinois is expected within one year of hire.
  • Ten or more years U.S. Interior Design practice experience.
  • Hold additional professional credentials that include and are not limited to CAPS, LEED, WELL, EBD, TOC etc.
  • A record of successful teaching of interior design courses in a college setting both online and in person (full or part-time).
  • Proven skills in directing student and/or team projects.
  • Variety of skills with software related to design presentation.
  • Community networking for student internships or studio projects.
  • Have presented at a scholarly conference and have research potential in terms of publications in scholarly journals, and conferences.
  • Have work published in scholarly journals and or completed presentations in regional and national conferences.
  • Have written and applied for grant funding (whether denied or accepted) or shown potential in attracting external grant research.
Salary/Benefits:

Adjunct faculty hold the rank of instructor and are hired on a per course basis.
